The true monsters of Florida

Greg Steube

Readers, please note: I am incredibly focused on a 'real-life' matter at the moment. It is nothing bad, but it does mean this article has been rushed. If you notice any issues, please let me know!

A few days ago, someone forwarded me a number of messages sent between NARSOL and their affiliates. Why? To highlight a disgusting new proposal from Florida Republican Greg Steube. Thankfully, word is that this proposal is likely to go about as far as an Italian sports car a day past its warranty. However, it's still worth looking at, as an example of the deceit and madness that pervades.

In essence, Steube wants to bar sex offenders from receiving socialized healthcare. In his press release, he stated:

Sex offenders have no business tapping into programs intended for lower-income and disadvantaged Americans,” said Rep. Steube. “Taxpayers have the right to know their hard-earned money is not being used to cover the medical expenses of serial abusers and criminals. Rapists and abusers have no business receiving federal benefits. My bill will protect Medicaid and ACA [Affordable Care Act] assistance for law-abiding Americans by barring sex offenders from accessing these programs.

A quick search was unable to illuminate the income levels of registrants. Still, I strongly suspect that registrants will, on average, be very much lower-income and disadvantaged themselves. Registrants struggle massively with housing and employment. Many of them have families who struggle along with them. To act like registrants are somehow stealing from the poor is absurd.

Of course, Greg Steube doesn't give a damn about the poor and downtrodden. Rather, he is the kind of man that treads on them. He is fundamentally opposed to the ACA, and now actively trying to destroy it piecemeal; first by attacking immigrants, and now by going after registrants. He also has a history or targeting other vulnerable people, such as transgender individuals, and attempting to withdraw funding for public services unless they change their name to something that endorses Donald Trump.

Anna Paulina Luna

Steube reminds me very much of fellow Floridian Anna Paulina Luna, who similarly introduces attention-seeking bills that target the vulnerable, and that stroke Trump's ego in the pursuit of political currency. As I mentioned in my long diatribe against American hypocrisy last year, Luna is not truly a Republican. She is a fraud, on record as having previously supported Barack Obama back when niceness was popular, and pivoted to full MAGA when such became more politically expedient. In her own words:

I’m able to take on different personalities depending on what image I am going for. I think getting into character of what you are selling is super important.

But what are Steube and Luna selling? They are selling the lives of all those whom they exploit for political power - in most cases, the weakest adult members of society, along with their dependents. These politicians care about little more than their own careers.

Blocking registrant access to healthcare does not protect children in any way whatsoever; rather, it increases the risk by leaving registrants with nowhere to go and nothing to lose. I've talked a lot about The Push with regard to MAPs, but registrants are a category to whom this issue perhaps applies even more acutely. They are truly beaten down to the point where rebuilding a life borders on impossible, making extreme and socially unacceptable behavior feel a lot less like a bad decision.

Politicians like Steube and Luna don't give a fuck. They would happily see registrants die and their children suffer. They will endorse death for downloads and policies that steal healthcare from families, while supporting a de facto dictator widely believed to be a child molester himself. They are the true monsters of Florida.
